This drawing appears on the reverse of the Study for the Summer Scene. This head "of a bearded man", as Sarraute puts it, can only be, in our opinion, that of Bazille himself. In Renoir's Portrait de Bazille, and in the preparatory drawing for The Family Gathering, Bazille is shown with an identical beard. It cannot be ignored that there are strong similarities between this drawing and hisSelf-Portrait in Shirt Sleeves particularly through the beard but especially the hairstyle that clears the forehead.
