Would this drawing be a study of Mme Gaston Bazille, the artist's mother, as depicted in The Family Gathering? There is every reason to think so, although in this drawing the characters appear younger. One will recognize in both works a strong similarity in the position of the hands placed on their knees. One can also notice the tree barely sketched in the upper right-hand corner of the drawing, which is perhaps the one in the painting in the Orsay Museum. Finally, the use of crosshatching was a subtle means used by Bazille to emphasize the outlines of his characters as in Unidentified Man with a Hat and Studies of Unidentified Subjects from the Orsay Museum [Kept in the Département des Arts graphiques du musée du Louvre]. This drawing is well within the straight line of Bazille's studies for his paintings.
