This Man Smoking Pipe, one of the few watercolors by Bazille that we know of, is most remarkable. In its simplicity, its technique, it can be compared to Manet's most beautiful watercolors.
Not only Bazille perfectly succeeded in drawing the smoker, but he knew, through elegant brown touches, how to highlight the different parts of the bust: the face, the long beard as well as the jacket, all discreetly highlighted by a slightly darker background.
It can be said with certainty, based on this example, that Bazille possesses the watercolor technique perfectly.
