Before starting his academies, Bazille perfected his drawing technique by taking, as here, a simple subject. This study, executed early in his stay at the Gleyre studio, may be dated November or December 1862.
From this subject emanates an unmistakable naivety. Bazille was inspired by an antique cast, probably a Greek or Roman statue, which he drew simply, in profile. The contours of this fixed, inexpressive face have been taken over; the chin, however, is not better drawn. One notes the near absence of modeling.
